MEMORIALS – Acceptable Experience

MEMORIALS, the dynamic duo of Verity Susman and Matthew Simms, unveil their debut single, “Acceptable Experience,” via Fire Records. Fresh off their Australian tour, they’re gearing up for their first album release later this year.

“Acceptable Experience” is a haunting tapestry of intertwined bass lines, vibrant Farfisa riffs, and intricate tape loops. The track explores themes of unfulfilled plans and lost opportunities, with lyrics that poignantly reflect on life’s unpredictable twists: “Expect so much and receive so few returns, it’s a long running curse.”

Drawing inspiration from the liberating jazz of Sun Ra, the track features soulful basslines, experimental tape loops reminiscent of Daphne Oram and Delia Derbyshire, and infectious melodies. MEMORIALS align with the sonic worlds of Broadcast, Portishead, and The Velvet Underground.

As seasoned multi-instrumentalists, Susman and Simms perform live as a duo, creating the soundscape of a full band with live looping on a reel-to-reel tape machine. Their past collaborations and influences have led them to MEMORIALS, where they channel free jazz and psychedelic rock into a unique musical journey.
